Rumor has it that the Gordon Biersch Brewery and Restaurant will be opening a brewpub(?) in the former Borders Bookstore at Fourth Street Live (corner of 4th and Liberty). Gordon Biersch is a 30-unit chain based in Chattanooga and Leinenkugel, part of the SABMiller/Molson/Coors global brewing conglomerate. How do you feel about that?

I don't know how I feel about it. I prefer the local breweries to places that do a microbrew/chain resto hybrid. To be fair I am sure that I'll try it once because they helped me get through a long layover at an airport once.

I grew up in San Jose and Gordon Biersch was the first microbrewery I frequented. It's been over 20 years, though, so my guess is it probably isn't really as good as I thought it was at the time. But it was my first, so I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for it.

Several beers of the Gordon Biersch line are listed in the BJCP guidelines are classic representations of their styles, so I was very excited when I first got to experience their beers at a Gordon Biersch in New Orleans. I hope the new one opening here is better than the one in New Orleans, as the beers there were not the cleanest lagers and were relatively uninspiring examples of their styles (except the Schwarzbier which was excellent). The food was pretty phenomenal for a chain, but this is a beer forum :-)
